How to Make a Bird Meg McKinlay 2021-04-20 To make a bird, you'll need hundreds of tiny, hollow bones, so light you can barely feel them on your palm, so light they can float on air. Next you'll need feathers, for warmth and lift. There will be more besides - perhaps shells and stones for last touches - but what will finally make your bird tremble with dreams of open sky and soaring flight? This picture book shows how even the smallest of things, combined with wonder and a steady heart, can transform into works of magic.

Good Reception Matt Mills 2012-09-01 How does it feel to be here and there - at the same time? Maxwell Greyson refers to himself as a project manager but really only makes use of that title in an attempt to mask his ridiculousness, which is something that has plagued him all of his life. He unwittingly embarks on a quest to find what he's always sought. He finds it, or rather he finds something, but doesn't know exactly how to process it or what to do with it. What ensues is a journey that starts at zero and ends up near the edge of the multiverse. Or is it the other way around?

Unbroken Laura Hillenbrand 2014-07-29 #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • Look for special features inside. Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. The Mask of Sanity Hervey M Cleckley 2020-12-30 First published in 1941, "The Mask of Sanity: An Attempt to Clarify Some Issues About the So-Called Psychopathic Personality" by Hervey M. Cleckley, an American psychiatrist, is considered to be the most important work on psychopathology of the twentieth-century. Cleckley based his work on clinical interviews with patients in mental institutions and continued to edit and revise his seminal work throughout the years. The title "The Mask of Sanity" refers to Cleckley's description of the psychopath as living behind a mask of normalcy, which makes the disorder very difficult to recognize and diagnosis. They may appear engaging, intelligent, charming, and sincere but behind this façade of a normal, functioning person they are severely mentally disordered and chaotic. Cleckley was the first to recognize the psychopath's lack of genuine emotion that stems from a serious and uncontrolled neuropsychiatric defect. Cleckley's work is startlingly insightful and his outline of the basic elements of psychopathology remains relevant nearly eighty years later. While highly controversial when it was first published, Cleckley's exhaustive research and the fascinating case studies he explores in detail make "The Mask of Sanity" an indispensable guide for both professionals and lay people alike who wish to better understand psychopathology. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls 2006-01-02 Journalist Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary and their four children lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination, teaching them how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family. When the money ran out, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town Rex had tried to escape. As the dysfunction escalated, the children had to fend for themselves, supporting one another as they found the resources and will to leave home. Yet Walls describes her parents with deep affection in this tale of unconditional love in a family that, despite its profound flaws, gave her the fiery determination to carve out a successful life. -- From publisher description.

The Great Influenza John M. Barry 2005-10-04 #1 New York Times bestseller “Barry will teach you almost everything you need to know about one of the deadliest outbreaks in human history.”—Bill Gates "Monumental... an authoritative and disturbing morality tale."—Chicago Tribune The strongest weapon against pandemic is the truth. Read why in the definitive account of the 1918 Flu Epidemic. Magisterial in its breadth of perspective and depth of research, The Great Influenza provides us with a precise and sobering model as we confront the epidemics looming on our own horizon. As Barry concludes, "The final lesson of 1918, a simple one yet one most difficult to execute, is that...those in authority must retain the public's trust. The way to do that is to distort nothing, to put the best face on nothing, to try to manipulate no one. Lincoln said that first, and best. A leader must make whatever horror exists concrete. Only then will people be able to break it apart." At the height of World War I, history’s most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in twenty-four months than AIDS killed in twenty-four years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision of science and epidemic disease.
Troy Costas Komborozos 2017-09-12 The goddess weeps for me. She places the golden mask on my face as her glittering tears fall like fluttering rose petals through air that trembles with light. Her eyes are fixed upon the golden mask. The mask shines, ornamenting the grim contours of my loveless visage. Moments ago, Clytemnestra drove daggers through me. Her murderous eyes fell upon the merciless stream of blood coursing through the now-uninhabited citadel of my body. The sight of the sacrificed Iphigenia was still emblazoned on her grieving mind. My wife watched as my life flooded out me, and I slowly felt myself being swept by a dark tide into the underworld. I felt a golden world slip away, and all that is left of it is the mask that now covers my lifeless face. I was told that the mask would allow my face to remain untouched while the rest of my body decomposed. I was told that a thousand years from now, someone will remove the mask and marvel at the immortal complexion underneath. The goddess continues to weep for me as everyone else has ceased to pour wordless whispers of longing upon my empty throne. The mask blissfully seared into my flesh and began its act of preserving my features so that they would live on. Destiny wears a mask, and now it will reveal its visage to me. It removes its mask as it stands before. I am young again, but this time I am wearing the golden mask. I realize that destiny will show its face to me as my face remains hidden behind gold. Moments ago, destiny entered the throne room with a shroud. My mask allowed me to see each movement destiny made. I wonder whether things will be different now. I already know everything that will transpire in the future: the abduction of Helen, the sacrifice of Iphigenia, the siege of Troy, the death of Achilles, and my own murder at the hands of Clytemnestra. I wonder whether I can prevent my daughter from being needlessly sacrificed. I wonder whether the voices of the gods will no longer push me to the brink of madness. Now, destiny holds its mask. The moment I look into its eyes, I know that everything that happened will happen again. I am wearing the mask now because I will wear it during my funeral. It is, after all, a funeral mask. Everything will happen as before because whether destiny is masked and unmasked is of no consequence to me anymore. Death has already come, for destiny spoke it.

Haunted Air Ossian Brown 2010 PHOTOGRAPHS: COLLECTIONS. The roots of Hallowe'en lie in the ancient pre-Christian Celtic festival of Samhain, a feast to mark the death of the old year and the birth of the new. It was believed that on this night the veil separating the worlds of the living and the dead grew thin and ruptured, allowing spirits to pass through and walk unseen but not unheard amongst men. The advent of Christianity saw the pagan festival subsumed in All Souls' Day, when across Europe the dead were mourned and venerated. Children and the poor, often masked or in outlandish costume, wandered the night begging 'soul cakes' in exchange for prayers, and fires burned to keep malevolent phantoms at bay. From Europe, the haunted tradition would quickly take root and flourish in the fertile soil of the New World.
