SMS Viribus Unitis Andrew Wilkie 2015-07-19 Tegetthoff Class In 1907 the navy of the dualist, multinational Austro-Hungarian Empire placed an order for a new class of warships, whose design was based on the â__all big gunâ__ concept pioneered by HMS Dreadnought. Eventually four Tegetthoff class vessels were laid down, including the flagship Viribus Unitis, Tagetthoff, Prinz Eugen and Szent Istvan. The last warship of the class was not completed until well into World War I. The vesselsâ__ careers were not especially eventful. They spent most of their service lives as a â__fleet in beingâ__ anchored in a well-protected port of Pola with only occasional trips to the Fažana Channel (well-screened by Brijuni Islands) for gunnery practice. During the war the ships were manned mainly by reservists, while the most promising and experienced members of their crews were detached to serve onboard submarines or torpedo boats, or assigned to land-based units. The second ship of the class ended her career in rather dramatic circumstances, which is why she perhaps deserves a more detailed treatment. Viribus Unitis The Battleship IV was laid down at San Marco on July 23, 1910 and launched on June 24, 1911. The Emperorâ__s court used the occasion to organize a lavish celebration designed to carry a strong political message. The Emperor insisted that the battleship be given a rather unusual, Latin name Viribus Unitis (Strength in Unity â__ Emperorâ__s personal motto).

This beautifully photographed book examines the three-dimensional geometric designs she is famous for. Fuse, often referred to as "the queen of origami," discovered the art of folding paper at just seven years old. She has come a long way since then, having had her work highlighted in exhibitions around the world, including Paris Origami (Carrousel du Louvre, 1998), On Paper (Crafts Council London, 2002) and her solo show Yorokobi (Bauhaus Dessau, 2004). In addition to teaching, folding and writing, she also collaborated with designer Denis Guidone for Milan Design Week 2018 and was a featured artist in Nova's episode "The Origami Revolution" (February, 2017). Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic Institute of Medicine 2006-08-24 Any strategy to cope with an influenza pandemic must be based on the knowledge and tools that are available at the time an epidemic may occur. In the near term, when we lack an adequate supply of vaccine and antiviral medication, strategies that rely on social distancing and physical barriers will be relatively more prominent as means to prevent spread of disease. The use of respirators and facemasks is one key part of a larger strategy to establish barriers and increase distance between infected and uninfected individuals. Respirators and facemasks may have a role in both clinical care and community settings. Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic: Facing the Flu answers a specific question about the role of respirators and facemasks to reduce the spread of flu: Can respirators and facemasks that are designed to be disposable be reused safely and effectively? The committee-assisted by outstanding staff-worked intensively to review the pertinent literature; consult with manufacturers, researchers, and medical specialists; and apply their expert judgment. This report offers findings and recommendations based on the evidence, pointing to actions that are appropriate now and to lines of research that can better inform future decisions.

Embroiderers Guild Transfers Collection Annette Collinge 2021-02-16 An important collection of beautiful, historically significant iron-on transfer designs from the Embroiderers' Guild. The use of hot iron transfers in embroidery has a long and fascinating history, but they've often been looked down upon by serious embroiderers and have therefore been largely overlooked. They were, however, produced in large numbers and much of the work created from them was of a very high quality. An important though largely forgotten part of the Embroiderers' Guild legacy is the huge collection of hot iron transfers dating back to the early 20th century that were created by members of the Guild. They fell out of favour in the 1960s and the Guild stopped producing them. Many transfers were stored away and haven't been seen since those times; others were simply thrown away. This publication, which consists of one booklet of transfers and one booklet of worked examples, showcases specially chosen examples worked in specific ways as an inspiration to readers to either follow, or work in their own way. This is a massively important collection of beautiful embroidery transfers that will excite embroiderers, textile artists, historians and lovers of traditional and vintage embroidery everywhere.

Paper Panda's Guide to Papercutting Louise Firchau 2016-11-02 This book has Paper Panda's very distinctive stamp on it and begins with a design section which takes the reader through a very personal account of what inspires her, how she works, and how Paper Panda came about. The techniques involved in papercutting are fairly simple and easy to explain, and this is covered through step-by-step demos. There is a design section, taking readers through the design process itself and including numerous examples of Louise's papercut designs. Starting with the themes and subjects that inspire her, it explains how she creates finished artwork suitable for papercutting, followed by how to make the template itself, and how to use the papercut to make cards, framed pictures, and so on. The aim of this section will be not only to provide readers with an insight into Paper Panda's creative world, but also to inform and inspire people to design papercuts for themselves. There are 20 papercut projects in the book; five from Paper Panda herself and five each from three of Paper Panda's design colleagues (Sarah Trumbauer, Louise Dyer and Suzy Taylor - all accomplished papercutters with online presences). Each project will consist of a template, which will be reproduced full-size at the back of the book, and a finished paper cut, together with some step-by-step instructions. The designs will be simple enough for beginners, though attractive and interesting enough to inspire more advanced paper cutters. The projects themselves will include cards, decorations, and mounted and framed pictures to hang on the wall, all using a variety of colored and patterned papers to show off Paper Panda and friends' distinctive and beautiful designs to their best advantage.
