It was the world's first monoplane shipboard fighter and the direct ancestor of the famous Mitsubishi A6M 'Zero'. The Allied reporting name was ClaudeThe Mitsubishi Jukogyo company began producing the Mitsubishi A5M4 fighter for the Japanese Air Force in 1934. Designed by Jiro Horikoshi the aircraft had a maximum speed of 270 mph (434 km) and had a range of 746 miles (1,200 km). It was 24 ft 10 in (7.56 m) long with a wingspan of 36 ft 1 in (15 m). The aircraft was armed with 2 machine-guns and could carry 132 lb (60 kg) of bombs.
