This tank paper model is the Renault FT, designed by Wayne McCulough and from landships. The Renault FT, frequently referred to in post-World War I literature as the "FT-17" or "FT17", was a French light tank; among the most revolutionary and influential tank designs in history. The FT was the first operational tank to have an armament within a fully rotating turret, and its configuration with the turret on top, engine in the back and the driver in front became the conventional one, repeated in most tanks until today. Armour historian Steven Zaloga has called the Renault FT "the world's first modern tank".
The Renault FT was a light tank deployed in 1918. Unlike the earlier French tanks it was designed to accompany infantry in large numbers to swamp the enemy like a "swarm of bees". The Renault FT was the direct ancestor of modern tanks since it was the first tank to have turreted armament and a rear-mounted engine.
Renault FT tanks were built with two types of turret; a round cast or an octagonal welded turret. The tank could be armed with an 8mm machine gun or a short 37mm gun. The FT hull was used as the base for a radio communications tank, the TSF and with a fixed enclosure with a short-barreled 75mm gun, the 75 BS.
The Renault FT was sold to many countries after WW1 and was still in service with the French Army at the start of WW2. The Germans used captured FTs as Luftwaffe airfield security tanks as well as in second line policing roles.[via landships]
