This cube craft paper toy is Kushi, the rice-growing, sake-brewing young woman living in Kamiki Village, based on the action-adventure video game series Okami, the papercraft created by scarykurt. Kushi is very gentle and soft-spoken, for the most part, and is the first true human friend to Amaterasu. She is the wife of Susano and later adopted a son named Kuni.
Kushi wears a yellow and red kimono patterned with rice grains on the sleeves, as well as a red hakama, presumably to keep her kimono clean as she works to make sake. Her long kimono sleeves are tied at the bottoms for the same reason. She wears three bales of rice on her head to mark her status as a sake maker.
When she is selected as Orochi’s sacrifice victim, she wears a white and light blue formal funeral kimono to the battle.
Kushi is a kind and gentle soul. She is one of the first humans that Amaterasu meets and straight from the start she is affectionate and kind to her. She will always run up to Amaterasu and give her a few rubs even without being bloomed.
Kushi has a very strong belief in the Gods, she believes that they will save her from being the Orochi’s sacrifice and she never doubts for a minute that they won’t help her. We also find out that because of this Kushi knew that Amaterasu was the Sun God and could see her red markings all along. We find this out after she has been saved from the Orochi’s grasp and she has known ever since Amaterasu fixed her water wheel.
Kushi is also very patient. She easily puts up with Susano’s laziness and other antics. She also is the only one not to get angry at him for drinking all of the 8 Purification Sake instead she uses her quick thinking to think of another plan.
She is very finally very trusting. She puts faith in the gods to keep her safe and she trusts that Susano will come to her rescue and fight off the Orochi.
Her role in the beginning is simply to make sake, something she does extremely well, as many of the villagers comment upon its legendary quality. A jug of Kushi’s sake inspires Susano to finally make his way out of his basement and remove the boulder blocking in the village. Later, for the Kamiki Festival, she works to make the legendary 8 Purification Sake made from water at the sacred spring in Agata Forest where Issun and Amaterasu meet her again on their hunt for The Eight Canine Warriors, attempting to fill a huge water barrel with the sacred Hitoshio Spring water and bring it back to Kamiki. When Susano drinks the entire stock of sacred sake shortly before the festival, Kushi brings forth her famous Thunder Brew.
As Orochi grows more powerful, Kushi’s role in the story becomes important when she is selected by him to be the all-important maidenly sacrifice that will bring him back to power. Although at first, Susano will not come out from his house, Kushi bravely heads off, trusting him to come save her in the end, carried on the back of Amaterasu and bearing a jug of the leftover Thunder Brew that she hopes to use to intoxicate Orochi so she can be rescued. After her rescue, she and Susano finally express their love for each other; they spend a quiet night in the Cave of Nagi during the rest of the Kamiki Festival. After the Festival, she remains in Kamiki Village, working on the sake for next year, offering support for Susano, and her usual kind words to Amaterasu and Issun.
