This Paper Relief Sculpture is Ichikawa Ebizo as Shibaraku, designed by N.Ogasawara via Canon Papercraft. "Ichikawa Ebizo as Shibaraku" is a picture depicting actor Ichikawa Ebizo in the role of Shibaraku, the main character of one of the most famous plays in the group known as the Kabuki Juhachiban, or "Eighteen Best Kabuki Plays."
The picture is one of the most well-known works of Utagawa Kunimasa I, an ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period. While being a print in the style known as ookubie, it is extremely impressionable in the way it portrays the actor from the side, making it a bold and powerful piece which is highly popular even today.
Utagawa Kunimasa became a student of artist Utagawa Toyokuni I because of his love for the theater and art, and it was under this master that his talent flourished. His work was highly acclaimed and he was expected to better his master, but he retired at an early age leaving only a few pieces to his name. This is considered one of his best. [via N.Ogasawara]
