Batman: Arkham City [Buy it from Amazon: Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3] is a video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and the Wii U, and is based on DC Comics' Batman. It is developed by Rocksteady Studios and published by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Games. It is based on the short-running comic book mythos, Arkham City, as opposed to most other Batman games which are adaptations of the character in other media besides the source material. It is the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Arkham City was written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini with Paul Crocker and Sefton Hill, and it is based on the franchise's long-running comic book mythos. In the game's main storyline, Hugo Strange incarcerates Batman in Arkham City, a new super-prison enclosing a portion of the fictional Gotham City. Batman must uncover the secret behind Strange's "Protocol 10" while protecting the other inmates from many of Gotham's most notorious criminals also imprisoned within Arkham City. The game's main characters are voiced by many actors from the DC Animated Universe, namely Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Batman and the Joker. The game is played as a third-person perspective action-adventure game with a primary focus on Batman's combat abilities, stealth and detective skills, and gadgets that can be used in both combat and exploration. Arkham City expands Batman's arsenal of gadgets and combat attacks and offers a more "open world" structure, allowing the player to complete side missions away from the primary storyline.
The game received critical acclaim and is one of the highest-rated video games of 2011 according to review aggregator Metacritic. It was the recipient of several awards including awards for Game of the Year, Action game, Action Adventure game, Adventure game and best original music score. A Game of the Year edition was released on May 29, 2012 in North America, and will be released on September 7, 2012 for the rest of the world. A Wii U version is set to be released in 2012. A spin-off iOS game, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, was developed by NetherRealm Studios and released on December 7, 2011.
